Press ReleasesSunBuster’s Bruce Piatt Wins Fort Benning 3-Gun Challenge Shoot Off TO: ALL OUTDOOR MEDIA FARMINGDALE, NY, December 6, 2009 – World Champion shooter, Bruce Piatt competed in the 2009 Fort Benning 3-Gun Challenge, hosted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. Now in its fifth year the event was held at the Brinson Range Action Shooting Complex. To add to the excitement of the match, competitors were driven to one of the nine challenging stages in the match in a Stryker Fighting Vehicle, each named after divisions within the Army. Piatt won the Army’s first time event called the Man-On-Man 3-Gun shoot off. Taking the top four shooters in the Tactical Optics, top two shooters in the Open, the top shooter in Tactical Iron and Heavy Metal division, shooters competed head-to-head using guns provided by match sponsors. Shooting a shotgun at 8 static clay targets at 12 yards, a rifle at six 8" steel plates at 125 yards, and finishing with a pistol at six 8" steel targets at 10 yards. Knocking out one shooter after another, Bruce's reward for winning the shoot-off was one of the rifles they used in the event and a chance to get warm. Commenting on Georgia’s unusual weather Piatt said, “Each day shooters were bundled up due to the cold temperatures in the high 20’s which made it more challenging to manipulate the ammo and work the gun. I was extremely pleased to be back participating and winning the first time shoot off in addition to winning 4th place in the Tactical Optics division, which consisted of 200 shooters. Coming off his recent Bianchi Cup win, Bruce easily pulled off the hat trick to win the event three years in a row. Six events make up the competition consisting of Rifle, Combo, Pistol, Flush, Flurry and Mixed Bag requiring competitors to shoot at colorful aperture plates of varying sizes and shapes from different distances. As well as engaging aerial clay targets with shotguns. Accuracy, speed, dexterity and teamwork played a significant role to have achieved both wins shared with Robert Massey and Jim Clark Jr, two well-respected shooters. The competition was as tough as always and the Texas weather was just as challenging. In addition to shooting a fully automatic AK-47, firing a M203 Grenade launcher, and riding in a Stryker vehicle, the Army Markmanship Unit fabricated for the competitors a 100 yard long, man made trench to simulate warfare like conditions which added more excitement and drama to the overall match.

Competing amongst six other teams, they will proudly keep the title for two years. Additionally, Carl finished 2 nd place in the overall event shooting a 1920 perfect score for the first time, while Bruce took 1 st place winning the Iron Man Match, making him the only individual to win this event as a four time National and two time World Champion since its inception four years ago. New Zealand is currently experiencing their spring season and weather conditions shifted on a daily basis impacting many shooters ability to see the targets clearly. Participating in what many refer to as the World Series of the Shooting Sports, Carl competed amongst 450 other shooters from around the world. Many competitors introduced themselves to offer Carl support and comment how proud and awestruck they were to shoot alongside him. "Winning the National High Power Rifle competition for the eighth time today, felt just as exciting and enjoyable as it was the first time,” Carl commented, "however, winning the Marine Gunner D.I. Boyd Memorial Trophy, was especially meaningful as I had previously competed here with David and he stopped my wining streak back in 1981. Overall, I'm pleased with my performance, particularly in dealing with the challenging winds coming off Lake Erie and onto the range. Veteran shooter Carl Bernosky has consistently won the standing matches over the years competing at Camp Perry, attributing his successes to being focused and comfortable shooting there while wearing a big X on his back. Carl commented, “Traditionally the weather at Camp Perry is unpredictable with strong winds coming across Lake Erie and dark skies, but this past week the weather was sunny and bright. I wore my SunBuster Extreme Green Lens, a dark lens which thinks it is a light lens providing me with minimal squint control.”Carl said “I’m looking forward to returning next year to get back on top of the pedestal; I still have the competitive spirit in me after all these years and find shooting very fulfilling.”
After the match was over, Bruce said "I'm really proud of today's performance, especially my long range rifle skills. Topping the field of over 250 scoped shooters using my iron sights really put the icing on the cake. Bruce finished strong shooting at metal plates with his customized iron sighted 40 caliber pistol, looking down his AR-15 rifle and crushing clay targets with his 12 gauge semi-automatic shotgun. He competed against 119 other shooters, where accuracy, power and speed are the criteria necessary to win this event, known as the "extreme sport” within USPSA. Weather conditions throughout the competition were ideal, offering everyone clear skies and sunny, warm filled days. Bruce commented, "There's no doubt, wearing my clear lens, with the prescription insert provided me with 100% clarity to easily find the targets amongst the shadows, particularly when one of the stages was setup in the woods.”
